What causes corrosion in toilets?

Over several years, even with weekly cleaning, there appears to be colored lines corroding through the porcelain toilet bowl. You can actually feel the indentation with your fingernail. The water source is municipal well water. The water softener works fine, but there must be some contaminant in the water because five of my neighbors have the same issue. What could it be?
