Tap water from an old building?

I travel around Canada a lot and generally just drink the tap water where ever I am. This week I am staying in an older hotel and I imagine the pipes in the building are just as old as the building its self. Is it safe to drink tap water from buildings with out of date plumbing, or is it possible the pipes could be corroding and contaminating the drinking water?
